At a Hawaiian reef break that is so notoriously it’s called Jaws, Australian surfer Mark Visser surfs atop a black ocean facing waves measuring 30 feet. He became the first night surfer to surf at Jaws, using a specially engineered LED light built into his board and buoyancy vest.


There’s nothing like temperatures that can reach -100 F to keep you on your toes.

For engineers Erik Verhagen and Camille Parisel, working in Antarctica on a project

appropriately called “IceCube” is both challenging and exciting.


While there are ways to get used to the harsh climate, these experts have to be very

resourceful to fix technical difficulties so far away from “civilization.”

Astronomers using ESO’s (Very Large Telescope) have for the first time obtained a three

dimensional view of the distribution of the innermost material expelled by a recently

exploded star, known as Supernova 1987A (or SN 1987A).


While a diver was trying to get video of a wild octopus, it suddenly dashed towards them and rips their
camera from out of their hands, then swims off, all while the camera is recording!


At a depth of 600 feet beneath the West Antarctic ice sheet, a small shrimp-like creature managed

to brighten up an otherwise gray polar day in late November 2009. This critter is a three-inch long

Lyssianasid amphipod found beneath the Ross Ice Shelf, about 12.5 miles away from open water.

NASA scientists were using a borehole camera to look back up towards the ice surface when

they spotted this pinkish-orange creature swimming beneath the ice.
